While over 70 companies have stepped up to help address the situation, there are likely hundreds of other parties, including other private companies and public entities, which have had a hand in creating the current environmental conditions of the Lower Passaic River.

Public entities that have contributed to the current situation include publicly owned treatment works, municipalities, the State of New Jersey and agencies of the federal government.

While the members of the Cooperating Parties will continue to work with the various Lower Passaic River stakeholders, additional responsible parties must be brought into the process and required to pay their fair share.

Members of the Cooperating Parties that received NJDEP’s Lower Passaic River Directive are also in discussion with the state environmental agency regarding interim restoration projects that could enhance the public’s enjoyment of the river. Any projects that develop from these talks will not interfere with the EPA and Army Corps of Engineers’ investigation of the river.

The Cooperating Parties look forward to the results of the EPA study, and working with all stakeholders to devise a plan that can best ensure a new life for the Passaic River. The success of this project hinges on the need for all responsible parties to step forward and aid in the effort.
