The Lower Passaic Cooperating Parties (the Cooperating Parties) comprise over 70 responsible companies working together to bring about a cleaner Passaic River. These companies believe there is a brighter future for the river, and each entity is doing its part to make that happen.

The Cooperating Parties are working in good faith with various stakeholders to help improve the river’s condition. In 2004, the Cooperating Parties reached an agreement with the EPA to fund a comprehensive environmental study as part of the Lower Passaic River Restoration Project. Under the terms of the agreement, members of the Cooperating Parties have committed a total of $10 million toward funding EPA’s investigation of the river contaminants. This study will provide a better understanding of the river’s condition and what work may be necessary to restore the river.

Pursuant to subsequent amendments to this Settlement Agreement, the Cooperating Parties have paid an additional $750,000 and agreed to fund up to $2.4 million more, for a total commitment of $13.14 million, for EPA’s activities related to the RI/FS.

Effective May 8, 2007, he Cooperating Parties entered into another agreement with the EPA whereby the Cooperating Parties agreed to complete the ongoing remedial investigation/feasibility study (“RI/FS” or “Study”) of the Lower Passaic River. Pursuant to this agreement, the Cooperating Parties will complete the remaining RI/FS tasks to provide the necessary data to enable the EPA and its partner agencies to better understand the Lower Passaic River’s conditions and to decide how to remediate and restore the River. See the “LPRSA Study” page for additional details.
